Monthly Meeting at Ocean Road Community Centre.

Afternoon Group, 1:30 p.m.

Midwinter shared luncheon.

Competition: Ikebana ‘Just the Two of Us’

Practice: Black and White for August competition. Black or white container, any shape, size, flat, tall, round. Container can always be painted. Spray cans from the Warehouse. No green leaves, these are easily painted black or white. Some artificial flowers may be used. Flowers in season can be painted. Blackboard for containers to stand on if you have one. Any design you fancy.

Evening Group, 7 p.m.

Our midwinter supper with guest members of the Waikanae Horticultural Society. The sales table will be there as usual but not the competitions for best bloom etc. Instead bring a table decoration, Christmassy if you like, the most popular wins the Pat Browne trophy.

Afternoon Group, 1:30 p.m.

Competition: ‘Black and White’.

Practice: Hand-Held Posy. Springtime. Spring flowers and leaves to wrap flowers or individual flower.

Evening Group, 7 p.m.

Speaker: Julian Chadwick. A photographic review of last summer’s Waikanae Lions Garden Tour.

Flower of the month: a spring bulb.

Monthly Meeting at Ocean Road Community Centre.

Afternoon Group, 1:30 p.m.

Competition: Hand-Held Posy (spring flower R.B.T.).

Practice: ‘Art Deco’ for October. Pottery container, plain china. Usually brownish greenish greyish colours. Material – marigolds of different colours with leaves. Cosmos with leaves, maybe fern. Doily to stand container on, paper or crochet.

Evening Group, 7 p.m.

Speaker: Cheryl Power. Cheryl works at Mitre10 and will bring some of this year’s new plants, as well as the latest gardening ideas and equipment.

And: next month is our annual flower show, 16 October, so after supper we will have a brief talk / demo on how best to prepare and display plants and flowers for exhibition. A good opportunity to ask those questions!

Coastlands Mall Display

We are putting together a display in Coastlands mall to publicise the Kapiti Horticultural Society and to draw attention to the fact that we are now 110 years old, and to advertise our Flower Show coming up on 16th October.

Competition: ‘Art Deco’

Practice: ‘Happy Christmas’ for November. Bring along anything you would like to do for a Christmas design for your home. Material – candlesticks, pine cones, pine needles on branches, baubles, figurines, ribbons, small logs, artificial, fresh, shallow dish, tall, medium, short, fat, round ,a wreath, anything you like!

Evening Group, 7 p.m.

Speaker: Professor Dearden: Professor Dearden is a historian and we are going to learn as much as we can about the homes and gardens of ancient Pompeii.

Flower of the Month: rhododendron.
